I'M NEW HERE
IMMANUEL:
A COMMUNITY OF CHRIST FOLLOWERS
When people think of the church, they often think of a place, a building. When you think of Immanuel, we hope you picture a community gathered around Jesus.
That is what we are.
We are a diverse community of imperfect but forgiven children of God, simultaneously sinners and saints, who are passionate about following Jesus where ever He may lead.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Immanuel is part of a voluntary association of independent congregations called The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. These congregations share a common confession of faith, as well as common goals for ministry and cooperative work.
With the universal Christian Church, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God: the Father, creator of all that exists; Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God's Word and Sacraments.
Lutheran churches arose almost 500 years ago when Christians sought to return the church to the teachings of Jesus and His first disciples. The issues on which the “reformation” focused can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
GRACE ALONE, FAITH ALONE, SCRIPTURE ALONE
God loves the people of the world, even though we, through our behavior, have failed to live up to his standard for our lives. In fact, the more honestly we look at our lives, the more we come to know that we deserve nothing but God's anger. But God sent Jesus, His Son, to save and reunite us to Him. The Bible says, "God shows his love for us in this; while we were still sinners Christ died for us." We are saved by grace alone.
By His suffering and death Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for all people of all times. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in us and gives people forgiveness through Jesus. We receive this grace through the blessing of His Word and the sacraments. We receive God's gifts by faith alone.
The entire Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the only way we discover God’s plan for our lives. God reveals himself to us through scripture alone.
WHO IS JESUS?
For more than 2,000 years people have asked the question, "Who is Jesus?". We were not present when Jesus lived on this earth, but in the Bible we have the record of his birth, life, death on the cross, and resurrection. Study of the Bible, God's Word, will enable you to seek out the answer to this age-old question. But be careful - it is an answer that will challenge you to respond!
OUR SUNDAY MORNING
THE DIVINE SERVICE
Our Sunday morning begins with Divine Service at 10:00 AM. Our style is Liturgical Lutheran worship including hymns, confession, readings, sermon, prayers and weekly communion. Weekly we gather around Jesus who comes to bless us through Word and Sacrament. We follow a three year lectionary that leads us through the Gospels, the Epistles, the Psalms and the Old Testament. The messages are rooted in the weekly readings.
WHETHER YOU WANT TO ATTEND IN-PERSON OR ONLINE,
THERE IS AN OPTION FOR YOU!
WE WANT FAMILIES TO WORSHIP TOGETHER
We encourage the participation of young children. Our Divine Service proceeds with Scripture Lessons followed by a Children's Message before the main Sermon. To help our families in worship, there are "Church Bags" available in the narthex (lobby) with activities for younger children. Plus, we have an easily accessible cry room.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
Prior to Service with an educational hour for children and adults. Children are invited to In-Person Sunday School stating at 8:45 am. We are gathering for Adult instruction (Hybrid: both Livestream and In-Person) at 8:45 am and expect to end at 9:30 am every Sunday (unless otherwise indicated beforehand).
OUR CORE VALUES
The following Core Values all intertwine and work together to form a whole... (Listed in no particular order).
We value our HERITAGE: Honoring that which has been passed down to us by our forebears, we seek to lay a firm foundation for generations to come. (See Psalm 28:8-9; Revelations 21:6-7)
We value our FELLOWSHIP: As we gather together to build one another up, we seek to share in the joys of koinonia and prepare ourselves to go out to share with others... (see Acts 2:42 ff; 1 John 1:3)
We value our COMMUNITY: Both in Glenview and the communities surrounding our church home are important to us; with all those around us, we seek to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called [us] out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
We value FAMILY: We seek to support and nurture the family unit of those who come to us for care; even as we look to incorporate them into our family in Christ. (see Ephesians 2:19; 3:14-15)
We value Christian EDUCATION: Even as we place an emphasis on the training up of our children (Proverbs 22:6), we also seek to continue our spiritual growth through all stages of this temporal life. (see 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:14-15)
